Denver Criminal Defense Lawyer. Former Prosecutor, Trial-Tested Defender.
Attorney Steve Prager is a Denver criminal defense lawyer and former prosecutor who has spent his entire career on the front lines of Colorado criminal law.
Steve grew up in Denver and left only long enough to earn his degree from the University of Colorado Boulder and his law degree from the University of Denver. At DU, he was awarded a scholastic excellence scholarship, received scholastic achievement awards in several courses — including Constitutional Law — and graduated with a Certificate in Constitutional Rights and Remedies. That work required additional coursework and practicums focused specifically on protecting people’s constitutional rights.
After law school, Steve went straight into the El Paso County District Attorney’s Office. He started by prosecuting misdemeanors — primarily domestic violence and DUI cases — and was quickly promoted to lead the County Court domestic violence specialist unit. In that role, he:
- Personally reviewed every new domestic violence case coming into county court
- Spoke with alleged victims and made the initial plea offers
- Retained and tried the most serious domestic violence cases
Steve was then promoted again to County Court Supervisor, where he handled serious domestic violence cases and other high-stakes misdemeanors, including matters that drew significant media attention. He also trained new deputy district attorneys on how to build domestic violence and DUI cases — and even rewrote the plea guidelines for county court, literally authoring the framework prosecutors in El Paso County still use to approach cases.
Today, Steve brings that experience home to Denver to defend people accused of crimes across the metro area and throughout Colorado. He has taken dozens of cases to trial — with results that depend largely on which side he’s on — and has appeared in courts across:
Denver, Adams, Jefferson, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Boulder, El Paso, Teller, Gilpin, Washington, Archuleta, Logan, Summit, and Clear Creek counties.
Because he has worked with so many judges and prosecutors in these courts, Steve understands not only the law, but how the people in the system actually think and operate.
Over the course of his career, Steve has:
- Handled hundreds of probation revocation cases
- Achieved significant success in domestic violence defense, including a recent full acquittal at trial
- Secured full dismissals or deferred judgments in his last 15 non-trial cases
- Obtained rare deferred judgments in DUI matters
- Helped even second-offense and high-BAC DUI clients stay out of jail
Steve is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the National College for DUI Defense, and America’s Top 100 Criminal Defense Attorneys, and he maintains a perfect 5‑star Google rating from former clients.
A fourth-generation Denver native, Steve is rooted in the community he serves. When he’s not in court or building a defense strategy, you’ll usually find him playing guitar, cheering on the Denver Broncos, reading, or lifting weights — always sharpening the mind and body he brings into your corner.
